You Are (NOT) A Dumb Sheep

This video is scary.

I don’t know the preacher or church or any of the details. It’s just a clip – 90 seconds of a sermon… but I find it chilling.

We are NOT called by God to blindly follow leaders. I don’t care how much you spiritualize the language.

Here’s what Jesus had to say about self-righteous, abusive, manipulative leaders: “Stay away from them; they are blind leaders. And if a blind person leads a blind person, both will fall into a ditch.” (Matthew 15.14)

An extreme position on either side is dangerous – to blindly trust or to refuse to ever trust.

We should not live paranoid, fearful, negative, nit-picky, suspicious, unable to trust.

Nor should we be blind, undiscerning, ignorant, fleeced, abused, or manipulated…

All I want to say is this: you are (NOT) dumb sheep.

I am a husband, father, pastor, leader & reader. I love God, love people & love life.

  1. That is a horrid video. Saddest part is the crowd cheering her on. Thanks for the encouragement that we aren’t dumb sheep.

  2. Wow…this is disturbing. The part where she says, “I don’t care if God told you, if your pastor doesn’t approve…”

Excuse me?! Lady check yourself before you wreck yourself.

I do understand that there are people that over use “God told me” as a means to do what “they” want to do but God does talk to us. We can’t forget that God puts leaders in our lives for our benefit BUT He also wants to have a PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP with us and that means He will speak to us about our lives..the good, the bad, and the ugly. If He speaks to me, I want to listen and obey.

Good reminder Pb that we should all use discernment when it comes to following leaders.

  3. I would much rather be a “lost sheep” than be held accountable for her words. Her words are so damaging and so misleading. Initially I was very upset and physically I’ll by what she was saying. Aching for those who were not receiving God breathed teaching. Now I ache for her. For her ignorance and sad that she appears to not understand the awesomeness of God’s Grace! Someone might have spoken these very things to her…thank you for your humility Pastor Brian!

  4. Oh my. Could not watch it all. Brought back memories of my history with a holiness Pentecostal church. Brian, thanks for setting the record straight. Kyle makes a good point about discernment. Enjoli makes a great one on grace. In the end, what pastor would really and truly want all that responsibility – all those decisions – on his or her head? That would be exhausting and strange and voyeuristic. Kind of like the NSA spying on crowds of people.
