Problem With The Bible

This post, “My Problem With The Bible,” by Brian Zahnd is definitely worth your time. Please check it out!

brian zahnd problem with the Bible

I have a problem with the Bible. Here’s my problem…

I’m an ancient Egyptian. I’m a comfortable Babylonian. I’m a Roman in his villa.

That’s my problem. See, I’m trying to read the Bible for all it’s worth, but I’m not a Hebrew slave suffering in Egypt. I’m not a conquered Judean deported to Babylon. I’m not a first century Jew living under Roman occupation.

I’m a citizen of a superpower. I was born among the conquerors. I live in the empire. But I want to read the Bible and think it’s talking to me. This is a problem… Read More

When God Disappoints

- - Life With God, Popular

Life is disappointing.

Things don’t work out the way we dreamed they would. Hopes are crushed; expectations go unmet.

And we press on. Disappointed? Yes. Out of the game? Not today.

I am well-versed in disappointment.

In my own experience, the most difficult kind is when God disappoints.

Can we talk about this?

Unanswered prayers

Apparent absence

Unprotected from terrible pain

Simple Bible verse formulas that don’t work – for me anyway

Blessings going to the undeserving while I get nothing for all my efforts

My guess: I’m not alone. You’ve felt this too… Read More

An April Showers Friday Fun & Free Stuff

It’s raining and I’m in the mood for something fun. Hope you are too!

# 1. FREE BOOK—Tattoos On The Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion by Gregory Boyle.

Um, wow. This book! Here’s what Anne Lamott said about it, “An astonishing book… about suffering and dignity, death and resurrection, one of my favorite books in years. It is lovely and tough and tender beyond my ability to describe and left me in tears of both sorrow and laughter.” Language warning: it’s PG-13. If you don’t win the book, check out Gregory Boyle’s TED Talk (also PG-13). #2. FREE BOOK—Beauty Will Save The World by Brian Zahnd.

Here’s a book I really enjoyed this past year – it’s about rediscovering the allure and mystery of Christianity. Be the first one to comment on this blog post & I’ll send you a copy (scroll down to the bottom of this page to comment). Also—follow Brian Zahnd on Twitter. You’ll be glad you did.

#6. VIDEO—New Order’s 2nd Reunion Tour.

I’m a child of the ’80′s and I listened to New Order back in the day. I saw them perform on Jimmy Kimmel the other night and couldn’t believe how awkward this looked. I almost thought it was a spoof.

#7. VIDEO—New Order 27 Years Ago Same Song.

Not a thrilling performance. Apparently stage presence isn’t his thing – but I do prefer this (closed eyes, no movement at all) over what it looked like more recently. What do you think?

My wife complained last week that I put way too many videos up on my Friday post—so today there’s only one (and I know she will watch it because it’s about donuts). See you next Friday for more fun & free stuff!
