Contentment or More. Choose Ye This Day Whom You Will Serve.

No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied. No matter how much we hear, we are not content. —Ecclesiastes 1.8

This summer while on vacation, I read the delightful Joanne Harris book Peaches for Monsieur le Curé. There were a number of times I took out my phone and typed out a line or two from the book to save because something sparked my imagination.

This quote was one that I had saved:

“Sometimes, on a day like this… I find myself wishing for something more.

More. Oh that word. That deceptive word. That eater of lives; that malcontent. That straw that breaks the camel’s back, demanding – what exactly?”  —Vianne Rocher

Her question about more—the straw that breaks the camel’s back, demanding – what exactly?” is what really spoke to me.

It seems as if the demand for more moves in the opposite direction from a state of contentment.

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. —1 Timothy 6.6-8

Contentment or more. Choose ye this day whom you will serve.

  1. Is this an intentional tease? there are so many avenues you could take this. I want you to expound on this thought…more!

    • Haha! Maybe an intentional tease. Maybe it’s me just putting something out that isn’t 100% all neat and tidy, a finished product. I have this folder I’ve been sitting on for a while under the title “Sparks.” They are ideas, quotes, concepts that make me feel and think – but they’re not really fully-formed or completely resolved. I’ve sat on them for so long that I decided to just start posting like this – stuff from the sparks folder… still in the idea phase… maybe something to discuss and argue about with friends, or maybe just something to put out there and let someone else think about and develop it further… or maybe just something to dismiss and ignore.

I see what you did there with “I want you to expound on this thought… more!” Ha!
