Your Twitter Bio Makes Me Feel Like A Total Loser

Because I’m a pastor, I pretty regularly get followed on Twitter by other Christian leaders (that I don’t know) from all over the place. And for some reason, I receive a weekly e-mail from Twitter showing me these new followers – along with their profile picture and Twitter bio.

These Twitter bios make me feel like a total loser.

Let me explain. They say things like…

“NY Times Best Selling author of 14 books, senior pastor of the 23,000-member Hope of the World Church, international speaker and business consultant, entrepreneur, recording artist, fashion designer, coach, mentor, mogul, part-time professor of theology, cultural architect, health & fitness guru, Christian radio host, father of 4 beautiful children, husband, man of God, ultra-marathon runner.”

Dang. That’s incredible. How do you do all that stuff?

And thanks for reminding me that I suck.

Even this “Twitter Bio Generator” comes up with bios that sound better than I actually am

See what I mean? Expert. Maven. Guru. Evangelist.

It seems we’re all supposed to have “Kanye-fidence” seeping from our Twitter bios.

All this makes me wonder what an honest Twitter bio might look like.

Maybe like this:

“Husband. Daddy. Youth Pastor. Recently got kicked 0ff the church insurance policy because I have too many speeding tickets. Now my wife has to drive the church van for youth events (and she’s mad about it).”

Haha! That could have been my honest Twitter bio 8 years ago.

Or maybe something like this…

I find myself being more drawn to the person behind an honest Twitter bio than the self-proclaimed guru/mogul type. One of my favorite honest Twitter bios is from Carol Vinson:

“Stone thrower. Wilderness dweller. Wanderer in search of grace.”

Recently, I reworded my own Twitter bio in an attempt to be more honest and less braggy. The idea for the bio came to me after a friend jokingly accused me of being a “closet heretic.” That description cracked me up and I decided to use it.

Anyway, I love the idea of honest Twitter bios and hope to see more of them.

Question: what would your honest Twitter bio look like?

  1. Haha love the Kanye thing! Post is true and funny!

    My twitter bio would be:

Madden Guru, spaghetti devourer, Jesus lover (cause that’s a thing in twitter bios) lactose intolerance with a ice cream addiction.

  2. Brian, I suspect a bunch of those Christian leader guys are following each other (and complete strangers) because they are fishing for sound bites and ideas for sermons. :O)

  3. “social media near addict, person who hates cleaning their house but loves a clean house, wants to eat out a lot, basically desires a free maid and cook, loves Jesus, loves some people” :-)
